I have a gallon of hickory nuts I collected for the first time this year. I’ve been toying with the idea of extracting the oil, as I’ve been put off by the cracking difficulty! We’ve been using the hulls when we cook on the grill – nice flavor!

The boy exaggerates. They are easy to crack — about as hard as a Brazil nut. But it’s true that they do shatter.

We have gallons. They are not really a commercial variety, for a reason: it takes five minutes to get into one, and then you have forty-five grains of shell-speckled, mild yet tasty nut. We’ll bring you some next time we’re in town.

I don’t think I have ever had a hickory nut?!
